Magnus Sheffield is the Truth, and He Is Hot On Remco Evenepoel's Heels
Featuring Our Man Isaac del Toro!
This weekend, Remco Evenepoel won his first stage race of the season, the Volta ao Algarve. Even though he was bested on two uphill…oh, my apologies, Lord Helmet, I must’ve made a mistake.
That’s better. Let’s start again.
Remco Evenepoel won his first stage race of the season, the Volta ao Algarve. It was not as easy as he had hoped. Dani Martínez beat the two-time defending Liège-Bastogne-Liège champion on an uphill finish in Stage 2, which was the subject of Friday’s newsletter.
Martínez bested Evenepoel again in the final stage of the race, but in between there was an individual time trial. As unusual as it is for Evenepoel to lose on a short uphill sprint twice in a week, it’s even less common for him to lose the Race of Truth.
Sure enough, Remco fucked everyone’s shit up.
That’s impressive—and I’ll get into the stats a little in a second—but not particularly interesting. The most exciting thing about this stage was the presence of two young North American riders in the top five.
